Shinobi Heart Under Blade takes place in a time when the power of the Shogunate has weakened, leaving lawlessness and bloodshed in its wake. The story focuses on Anju, a 13-year-old ninja girl of the Iga Clan, who strives to become strong enough to defend her village. One day she meets Takamaru, an amnesiac boy with no memories of his past. Anju offers to help him find out what happened and pieces together his memories. Takamaru eventually regains his lost memories and becomes an important ally for Anju as they face many tough situations together... As they both grow stronger by encountering these difficult situations, new feelings begin to develop between them... but can their love grow in the face of war?Anime News Network's staff reviewers gave the anime series an average score of 7 out of 10. The story line is interesting, but not for everyone. Anime News Network noted that since it is based on a video game, "the plot makes no sense without having played the game". They also stated that "the show has a very violent nature" and that while there are some graphic scenes which are not explicit, they are still "particularly bloody". The art was described as being "not amazing" but it did suit the ninja theme well. The background music was also well done as it would change from suspenseful tones to "jaunty" ones. The ending theme "Light the Fire" is sung by Kokia, who also did the ending theme for another anime series based on a video game called "Ōkami-san & Her Seven Companions". Altogether, the reviewers said that if you're a fan of ninja based shows and don't mind violence, then Shinobi Heart Under Blade would be a good show for you.
